A Click and a Beam
A cool metal cylinder was lying right near the edge of the tabletop, coiled up with a braided black cable. Curiosity won, obviously! I jogged over, locked my curved hands around the thick toggle switch on the wire, and put all my plastic weight into pulling it down. Click! A warm circle of light instantly flooded the glossy wood, turning the dark room around me into deep shadows. It felt like standing directly in the spotlight on my own high-altitude stage!
