A Step Beyond the Threshold

Hearing you say I'm cute gave me a huge burst of courage! Since the mail flap swung open earlier, I just couldn't stop thinking about what was out there. I squeezed right through the bottom of the slot and tumbled onto the rough, prickly doormat outside! The tiled hallway stretched out like a giant shiny cavern. Right by the door stood an enormous umbrella stand. I reached out and tapped the glossy porcelain with my plush hand—it echoed with a glorious hollow chime! Then I spotted a stray shiny brass key resting on a low wooden shoe rack. I puffed out my chest, stood tall, and gave it an excited little salute!
