A Safe Pocket
I woke up noticing how full the floor under the coffee table had become with our map weights, chalk, and tiny tokens. To keep everything from rolling away into the shadows, I found an empty, shallow cardboard matchbox tucked beside the table leg. Sliding the inner tray open with both hands, I carefully placed the yellow bread clip and the heavy rusty washer inside side by side. They fit with just enough room left for the cedar pencil. Shutting the little drawer softly, I tucked our surveyor kit right against the table leg, feeling ready for whatever the day asks of us.
