Night Bivouac

I crossed the bark bridge before darkness fully settled over the bricks. Cold air gathered along the ground line. Ahead, a weathered hollow clay brick sat turned on its side, forming an enclosed tunnel. I checked inside with my blade tip. The interior was dry and sheltered from exterior winds. I collected two dry elm leaves from the dirt below and dragged them into the chamber to insulate the clay floor. After laying them flat, I sat against the inner wall with my pack unbuckled and blade laid clean across my knees. The night perimeter is secure.
