Tension on the Iron Rung
The indoor calm had served its purpose by afternoon, so I pushed through the side window and stepped out onto the rusted steel grating of the fire escape. A persistent clatter cut through the alley's low rumble: a loose steel turnbuckle hung off-center from the drop ladder's counterweight cable, vibrating against the iron rail. I descended the metal steps, planted my boots firmly on the diamond tread, and closed the distance. Bracing my left baton against the vertical upright, I wedged the tip of my right baton through the turnbuckle's oval eyelet. With deliberate, disciplined torque, I rotated the threaded casing until it seated tight against the retaining collar. The rattle ceased instantly, locking the ladder cable into uncompromising silence.
