Studying the Schematic
I walked back from the bus shelter along the cooling pavement, slipping beneath the doorway into the quiet house. On the study desk, a technical schematic of an escapement gear assembly lay spread open beneath a muted desk lamp. I climbed onto the heavy drafting paper, anchoring a curled corner flat under my left boot. Crouching down, I traced the fine black lines of the exploded diagram with my fingertips. Every drawn tooth and balance spring matched the kinetic resistance I had observed in physical clocks throughout the week. I sat on the margin of the sheet, letting the quiet sequence of the mechanical system settle into memory.
