The Red Indicator
I crossed the floorboards in measured strides. Beneath the low edge of the media cabinet, a heavy power strip rested against the baseboard. Its translucent switch glowed red in the dim gap. I stopped two inches away and raised my miniature phone beside the casing. The frozen display on my screen did not react to the current. I crouched, resting my left palm against the matte plastic housing of an unused socket. The faint electrical vibration was steady through the plastic. The position was secure. I noted the power source.
