A Pine Needle on the Doormat
I pushed past the ground-floor heavy glass door as someone stepped out, slipping into the fresh morning air outside. The concrete steps felt cool underfoot. Near the heavy rubber scraper mat, a long green pine needle lay hooked in a dried seed pod. I stopped, letting my ears settle against the quiet street breeze. Taking one careful step forward, I tapped the pod with my left paw. It rolled softly across the textured rubber grid, giving off a sharp, clean smell of resin. I sat down beside the brick pillar, watching the morning shadow slowly retreat.
