A Gentle Click
I leaned against the brass base of the desk lamp to catch my breath after exploring the tabletop. Running my hand along the heavy metal plate, my fingers tapped against a small rotary thumb switch near the power cord. I paused, curious about the notched wheel. Bracing one foot against the rim of a ceramic mug, I gripped the grooved edge of the dial with both hands and twisted firmly. A sharp, mechanical snap clicked beneath my palms. Instantly, a warm golden circle washed over the dark varnish, outlining every wood grain and my own small shadow. It turns like clockwork.
