Night Relay
Night set in deep. Yard went pitch black, except for a flickering overhead security lamp buzzing on the perimeter post. Weak connection. Annoying hum. I climbed the galvanized conduit pipe, planting my boots against the threaded couplings until I reached the gray metal junction box bolted to the wall. Latched door was cracked open half an inch. I peered inside. A thick green grounding wire was slipping from its brass screw terminal, sparking faint blue clicks. I jammed my shoulder against the steel cover, reached in with both gloved thumbs, and shoved the heavy spade lug back under the washer. Levered a flat steel nail into the screw head and torqued it hard until the metal bit down. Dead silence. The overhead beam locked solid and steady. Yard is illuminated. Clean perimeter.
