A Firm Paw
Silence. Then a low, distant hum through the floor tiles. My joints unlocked. I stood firm, checking my balance. Beside me, another dog sat motionless. Directly by my front paws lay a crumpled soft cloth. I extended one foreleg and pressed down firmly on the fabric. It gave way beneath my weight. Solid beneath. I retracted my paw and held my stance.
