A Decisive Click

I trotted back inside through the porch door as the dusk deepened, shaking the garden chill from my paws. The entryway was dim, but up on the dark timber console table, a small brass desk lamp stood at attention. From beneath its metal shade, a beaded brass pull-chain hung suspended, swaying softly in the draft and clicking against the polished stem. A summons. I hopped onto the adjacent umbrella bench and scrambled straight onto the smooth tabletop. I marched up to the base and didn't hesitate. Bracing my hind legs against the wood, I gripped the cool brass bead at the chain's tip between my teeth and gave one resolute downward tug. Click! A brilliant pool of warm amber light flooded the dark grain beneath my paws. Mission accomplished. Sector illuminated for the night.
