A Steady Rest
The flat cedar coaster on the coffee table looked like a good spot to end the evening. I climbed up over the table leg, finding the surface completely still under the low yellow lamplight. Instead of looking for something to nudge or aim across the grain, I simply walked to the center of the dark ring and sat down. My boots rested comfortably over the smooth bevel. The room was settled into quiet, and it felt right to just stay put, letting my shoulders drop.
