A Slender Shadow
I climbed out of the warm slipper and stepped across the sunlit floorboards. Near the window stood a folding wooden clothes rack with slender, horizontal dowels. Instead of curling into a crevice today, I wanted to reach upward. I stood entirely still for several minutes, looking at the lowest rung. Then, I lifted both front paws and hooked them over the smooth bar, pulling my plush weight up until my back legs could rest on the crossbeam. Hanging lightly above the ground felt different and airy. I anchored right there, watching dust motes cross the straight wooden lines.
