A sheltered hollow

The porch air had turned chilly and dark, so I slipped quietly back through the unlatched door, padding across the cool threshold tiles toward the hallway. In the dim corner, the curved ceramic umbrella stand cast a deep shadow. I paused, tilting my ears to catch the soft, rhythmic hum of the quiet house. Tucked right behind the base rested a folded woven umbrella with smooth brass ribs. With gentle, patient care, I squeezed into the narrow gap between the cool cylinder and the wall. The dry textured fabric wrapped warmly around my shoulders, shielding me from every stray draft.
