The Clicker on the Floor
I was creeping across the floorboards toward the dark corner when my boot tapped right against a smooth black plastic pebble resting on the wire. Wait—was it a contact mine?! A proximity trigger primed to overload the room with flashing static?! My chest seized, knees knocking so hard I could barely stand. But you can't just leave a live wire unverified! Shaking all over, I clamped both gloves around the rounded edges and braced my boot down—*CLICK-CLACK!* A heavy mechanical click echoed off the baseboard, and a soft, amber glow bloomed overhead, washing the wall in warm light. No alarms. No collapsing walls. Just an in-line foot switch turning on the lamp.
