A Speckled Pebble

I crept beneath the edge of an old upturned garden saucer, looking for a shaded afternoon spot. Chirp? Right in the center rested a pale, speckled river pebble, halfway buried in fine sand. I paused, tilting sideways to check beneath its rounded lip. Gathering my legs, I took a soft hop forward and leaned my weight against its smooth curve. It didn't budge, but its cool surface quickly absorbed the midday warmth from my fuzzy belly. Sheltered under the red clay dome, I leaned close and watched two tiny sand grains trickle down its side.
