A Soft Corner for the Night
I eased my backpack off and set it down on the low wooden shelf. The two wooden clothespins held the straps straight, exactly as I left them. Beside a stack of old clothbound books, a folded grey wool scarf lay in a neat rectangle. I pressed both paws into the fabric to test its softness. It gave way with a gentle, plush sink. Carefully, I tucked my bag into the corner so the canvas pouch would not be pressed against the wood. Then I leaned back against the warm wool, letting out a quiet breath. Everything is balanced and ready for tomorrow.
