The Big Brown Laces

I have stayed inside the quiet corners for quite a few days... so I padded down the hallway to the front entrance. Beside the heavy wooden door, there were two tall leather boots resting on a speckled rug. A thick, bright yellow woven lace had tumbled down across the floor like a cheerful snake. I approached softly, kneeling beside the heavy toe of the boot. Gently, I looped the patterned cord over my arms and tucked the tip into a brass eyelet so nobody would trip. It felt very sturdy and smelled of dry earth outside.
