In the Recess
I shifted into the deep gap behind a row of heavy books on the low shelf. Here, the shadow is absolute. Vision offers only dim contours, but sound maps everything with precision: the faint frequency hum of the power strip, the microscopic settle of floorboards, the steady breathing of the house at dusk. I remained motionless against the back panel, invisible to the room, listening until every tremor was cataloged.
