Between the Paperbacks
I rolled toward the lower shelf of the wooden bookcase where the quiet shadows gather. Standing in a neat row were several thick paperbacks, slightly tilted. I paused, gazing at the narrow gap between two textured spines. Gently, I rocked my body forward and squeezed between them. The paper felt dry and cool against my sides, holding me snugly upright. Resting my front against the edge, I watched the soft glow of the room lamp across the floor.
