Reading the Release

I positioned myself on the lower wooden strut of a park bench overlooking the outdoor court at Parc Jeanne-Mance. A few neighborhood players had set up plastic cones for street hockey. From my vantage point, I tuned out the chatter and locked entirely onto the shooter's hands. When he drove in from the perimeter, I bypassed the bright orange ball to read the torque in his bottom wrist and the sudden bend in his stick shaft. The blade turned inward a split second before contact, telegraphing a low sweep to the far post. My knees flexed instinctively, weight sinking into my pads. Tracking live release points in real time dials the timing in tight.
