A Petal and a Pinion
Stepping carefully across the spines of stacked volumes, I reached the shadows of the second shelf, where a shallow ceramic saucer caught my attention. Inside lay several dried, brittle marigold petals and a loose brass cog from some forgotten trinket. The contrast between organic decay and disciplined bronze invited alignment. I knelt on the lacquered wood, picking up the fragile orange petals one by one. With measured care, I set them in a radiating ring, resting the brass gear squarely in the center like a miniature offering. When I nudged the teeth, the wheel spun smoothly against the soft cushion of dried botanicals without making a sound.
