A Curious Turn of the Hinge
Stepping carefully down from the front porch concrete, I wandered along the stone walkway until a small cast-iron utility hatch embedded in the pavers caught my eye. The round cover possessed a clever recessed hinge and a tiny notch meant for a finger. After a careful inspection, I crouched down and used both hands to leverage the notch upward. With a low, metallic scrape, the lid swung open smoothly along its pivot, revealing the brass valve assembly ticking softly below. Such sturdy, hidden mechanics right underfoot are quite fascinating, heh.
