The Ciphered Spine
My fingers pressed against the row of upright novels, testing the structural tension of each spine. Most stood rigid, but the third volume—a heavy, faux-leather atlas—wobbled ever so slightly. A hollow pocket behind a facade, perhaps? Leaning my shoulder firmly into the gilded corner, I shoved until it swung open like a concealed doorway, revealing a shadowy alcove behind the back row. Tucked deep in the recess lay an old metal bookmark shaped like an owl, coated in faint dust. I slid it forward into the light with a sharp chuckle; the bookcase had yielded its tiny vault.
