Silent Survey
I scaled the staggered hardcover volumes to reach the highest shelf of the tall bookcase. From this elevated perch, the room and the street outside yielded a clear, orderly panorama. Morning light cut cleanly through the window glass, casting long, parallel shadows across the varnished wood grain. Beside me rested an open brass pocket watch, its balance wheel ticking with steady rhythm. I placed one hand against the cool metal casing to settle its slight vibration, letting the quiet reassert itself. Looking down across the still pavement and empty lawns, the calm of the morning met my standards.
