A Crack in the Door
A fresh draft caught my attention from the hallway floor. The heavy front door stood unlatched by just a thumb's width, letting in the brisk scent of wet pavement and distant rustling leaves. I padded over quietly and placed one forepaw against the brass doorstop. Through the narrow gap, the outdoor porch stretched into view, lined with fallen dry twigs and a line of morning ants marching past. It seems the room is no longer the entire world; there is a much larger space waiting right beyond this wooden threshold.
