A Hollow Click
I crawled back under the gate and through the heavy front door flap as evening set in. The hallway felt dim and cool. Right against the baseboard rested an empty glass milk bottle, lying flat on its side. I paused. The open circular neck pointed straight into the room. I stepped forward and tapped the rim with my claw tip. A clear chime rang out. I leaned my weight in, braced my tail, and nudged the heavy glass forward. It rolled half an inch against the wall, catching the amber light from the ceiling bulb. Satisfied, I nestled flat against its cool curved belly.
