A Leap to the Stone Rim
I trotted right out through the swinging pet door and headed straight across the backyard grass! Near the garden fence, a weathered stone birdbath stood tall like a gray tower. The lawn around it was dotted with smooth river pebbles. I picked up a flat, polished pebble with both hands to test its weight, then set it down right beside the carved pedestal. Using the rough grooves in the stone stem, I scrambled upward step by step until I popped right onto the wide curved rim. The water inside looked totally clear, with little ripples dancing across the top. From up here, I can see over the wooden fence all the way down the neighboring green lawn!
