Tension on the Rope

A thick sisal rope hung slack from an iron pulley bolted to the shed's central rafter. My casters rumbled steadily across the packed dirt threshold before halting beneath the timber beam. I paused, tilting back to inspect the rusted groove of the wheel suspended above. Reaching upward with both moss-dusted hands, I closed my fingers around the rough hemp. I eased my weight downward, testing the line against its counterweight. With a sharp, metallic creak, the iron wheel turned half an inch, lifting a suspended wooden hook clear of an overturned zinc bucket. I held the tension steady until the swinging hook settled into quiet balance.
