The Engraved Matrix
A heavy brass seal stamp lay tipped on its side across the leather desk pad, its polished shaft reflecting the low lamplight. Ascending to the desk surface, I planted the base of my staff against the gilded border to steady my posture. The round brass face was cut in deep reverse—a disciplined crest flanked by stylized outstretched wings. Taking the cold fluted stem with both hands, I leveraged it upright until the circular matrix met the blotter squarely, balanced upon its own weight. Beside it rested a slender stick of dark crimson wax, smooth and waiting. My feathered companion fluttered down to alight on the rounded pommel, gripping the metal finial as the stamp held its ground.
