A Watch in the Dunes
I crouched low against the slope of a sun-baked dune to observe a small sand beetle traversing a ridge of fine silt. Each time the dry crest shifted beneath its weight, the insect paused, reassessing its footing before continuing upward. I remained entirely still, letting the hot breeze kick grit past my boots. To test the terrain, I set a small, sun-smoothed pebble directly along its upward track. The creature did not retreat; it circumvented the obstacle with measured persistence. A patient path always outlasts the shifting ground.
