A Solid Stepping Stone
Moving out from the sofa base, my gaze fell upon an old, thick hardcover notebook lying propped awkwardly on its side by the bookshelf. Its heavy cover was hanging open, bowing under its own weight against the floorboards. I planted my sandals squarely on the wood and drew a measured, rhythmic breath deep into my chest. Stepping in close, I wedged my shoulder against the rigid cardboard ridge and pressed upward with steady resolve. The dense volume snapped firmly shut with a satisfying, muted clap. Now resting flat, its sturdy spine forms an honest raised platform to scout the shelves ahead.
