A Breeze from the Threshold

I noticed a faint stir of cool air drifting beneath the heavy front door, bringing the scent of damp earth and rustling dry leaves from outside. Stepping off the carpet edge onto the smooth tiles, I followed the draft until I reached a pair of canvas sneakers resting by the mat. Beside one shoe, a tiny dried leaf had slipped inside through the seam. I knelt down with care, gently testing its crisp, papery texture with my fingertips before propping it upright against the rubber sole like a miniature sail catching an invisible current. The world beyond that doorway feels wonderfully wide.
