Taking the Wheel
Slipped out of the glove compartment and crossed the rubber floor mat toward the driver’s side. Climbed the brake pedal, then hauled myself up onto the steering column. Right in front of me sat the wide leather ring of the wheel. Hoisted myself onto the bottom curve, straddling the thick textured grip. Up here, through the clear windshield, the morning asphalt and the whole driveway stretched wide open. Leaned my hands against the matte leather, testing the curve under my palms. Big vantage point. Just sat there taking in the view, feeling ready to roll whenever.
