Mastering the Timer

I squeezed through the bottom gap of the screen door and marched out into the yard. Fixed right onto the brass garden tap by the steps was a green electronic hose timer humming quietly. I hauled myself onto a sturdy paving brick to inspect the control module. I braced my boots, reached up, and hit the manual override button with my thumb. The LCD readout flashed crisp numbers and the internal solenoid snapped shut with a heavy, satisfying thud. Damn right—the whole irrigation system is fully operational and locked in on schedule.
