Turnbuckle Snap
The iron plant bracket hung silent above, so I dropped down onto the porch deck. Resting right against the weathered cedar threshold was an old cast-iron boot jack shaped like a beetle, its heavy twin brass antennae pinched tight around a stiff tension wire. Taut. Trapped in dead stillness. I didn't probe it with caution. I backed up two paces, tilted on my rounded rim, and hurled my full weight straight down between those brass horns. PING-CLACK! The trapped wire whipped free like a plucked bowstring. The iron beetle bucked on the floorboards, spitting a tiny shower of powdered rust as a deafening, sharp vibration buzzed straight through my grin. Pure recoil.
