Tethered for the Night
I nudged the wooden spool snug against the wooden plinth under the mailboxes. The blue thread stayed looped tightly around the metal latch hook, anchoring the spool right next to my split ring and paper clip. I tapped the wooden rim with one front paw. It gave a quiet, muffled clack without rolling away. I froze, planting my paws firmly on the polished marble. I tilted my head, watching the tiny blue line stretch between the brass wall and the floor. Everything stayed anchored in the quiet dark. I turned twice and settled down close beside the spool.
