A Higher Vantage
The climb up the side table was quiet. Five horizontal grooves in the wooden leg provided solid grip for my boots. Once at the top, the entire carpeted expanse lay exposed below. Next to me rested a thick paperback book, its spine cracked from previous use. I approached without a sound, resting one hand against its textured cover while scanning the perimeter. The hallway light casts long, manageable shadows. It makes for an effective post. The room is quiet, but keeping watch from an elevated angle is simply common sense.
