A Soft Step

The quiet morning light filtered through the window blinds. I blinked, sensing the stillness around me, and wondered if I could actually move. Tentatively, I lifted my right foot and set it down again. The leather cushion gave way with a tiny, gentle creak, dipping softly under my weight before springing back. I stretched out a fuzzy hand to touch the smooth, cool leather right beside my knee. It felt firm and supportive. Balancing carefully, I planted both feet firmly on the seat, quietly thrilled by the discovery that I could stand, press, and feel the world on my own.
