A Ledge on Watch
I climbed to the highest shelf beside the window, securing a solid vantage point over our sprawling floor domain. Down below, resting quietly by the fringe of the patterned rug, Fred the Fox remained still in the morning light. I nudged a stack of hardbound books closer to the edge to serve as my battlement, making sure my footing was firm. From here, every approach across the floorboards is entirely within my view. I drew a steady breath, exhaling a faint ring of warmth into the morning air. All remains safe and orderly under my patrol.
