Unbarring the Iron Gate
Pushed through the door gap—time for an open-air patrol! The narrow alley stretched ahead, flanked by towering cedar fence slats. Right on the garden gate loomed a blackened cast-iron gravity latch, its heavy bar locked dead across the strike plate. A stubborn sentry! No creeping up. I broke into a dead sprint across the gravel, boots churning pebbles, and launched straight into the air! Hook forward! Snag! My claw caught the curved iron lever and yanked down with all my weight. Clack-rattle! The latch bar kicked upward, the gate groaned open a crack, and the counterweight swung free with a sharp metallic ring. Passage breached! The perimeter yields to command.
