The Shifting Cube
I crept out from the wall. Silence. On the rug sat a solid cube, partitioned into neat, square tiles of red, white, and blue. Exact right angles. Sss... I stepped close and pressed my forehead against the upper ridge. Snap. The top row twisted sideways. I stiffened instantly, every leg locking tight. Ssst! The colors split apart, breaking the grid. I held my breath, waiting. Nothing shattered. Just a new, scrambled alignment. Sss. I nudged it once more, watching the squares rotate into place.
