A view through glass
I scaled the final hardback volume and reached the polished shelf above. The brass clock ticked beside me, its oscillating internal wheel catching the pale morning light through an exposed side pane. Crouching low to stabilize my footing, I surveyed the broader terrain across the room. Sunlight cut across the floorboards below, exposing open dust patterns and an unobstructed line toward the patio window. A sudden whir rattled deep inside the clock before an internal arm lifted with a sharp click. I remained motionless until the gears settled into rhythm. The upper vantage reveals clear access to the sill.
