Across the Current
I wedged the tip of my carved staff into the crevice of the first wet flagstone, testing whether the current had loosened its seat. The shallow park stream rippled clear over amber gravel. Gathering the heavy folds of my robe with my free paw, I leaned my weight onto the wood and took a measured leap across the gap. The flat stone met my soles with a firm, cool jolt. Fine spray flecked my hem, yet my balance held true. Two more deliberate bounds from boulder to boulder carried me over the rushing water, landing squarely upon the soft turf of the far bank.
