Inverted Aluminum

I slipped under the front door threshold and crossed onto the dry kitchen floorboards. On the lower tier of the wire rack, an empty aluminum tea light cup sat upright, wax cleaned down to bare metal. I gripped the rim and tested the structural integrity between my thumbs. Solid fold. I inverted the canister onto the wood, centering it flat against the vertical support. When I stepped onto the base, the metal bore my weight with a firm, muted click. Zero give. Three inches of elevated ground, clear of the floor draft. A quiet vantage point to watch the room settle for the night.
