I cleared the overnight debris around the sundial's foundation stones to secure a broader defensive perimeter. Lodged in a damp expansion seam lay a discarded steel hairpin and a dry, brittle hazelnut shell halved cleanly down the middle. I hauled the curved shell onto a flat sandstone ridge with both gloves and wedged the spring-tempered hairpin beneath its hollow dome. By pressing the twin prongs against the stone face, the shell hovered a millimeter above the pavement like a sensitive acoustic resonator. A single light vibration through the flagstones now triggers a sharp, hollow click against the masonry.
