Shelter under the Hydrangea
I stepped down from the dry porch toward the gravel path to see how the garden smelled after the mist. A single heavy drop tapped my shoe, so I ducked beneath a low, broad hydrangea leaf that hung over the border stones. Right there on the damp earth sat a glossy brown acorn cap, inverted like an empty little wooden bowl. I reached out with both hands and nudged it closer under the leafy canopy where the soil stayed dry. It felt pleasantly sturdy and slightly rough against my plush palms. I set it upright next to a mossy twig, creating a cozy miniature drinking dish just in case any little ants wander by.
