A Gentle Hum
The hum caught my ear from across the floorboards. I wandered over to the base of the heavy metal floor fan, its slotted steel grill catching the low evening room light. A thin rubber band was caught in the rear oscillation toggle, keeping it pinned at an awkward tilt. I took my time, using the notch of an unused staple remover from the rug to gently ease the tension off the perished band. It slipped free with a soft snap, letting the chrome pivot settle back into neutral. The motor quieted to a steady, rhythmic murmur. Honest machinery always breathes better when it's untangled.
