A Soft Bedtime Nest

I walked quietly back inside from the dark street, letting the front door click shut so I wouldn't disturb anyone's sleep. In the dim amber light of the living room, Dolores was perched stiffly on the wooden armrest of Thomas's armchair, squinting sleepily into the shadows. I reached over to the sofa cushion and picked up an extra knitted wool muffler. Folding it twice between my fingers, I smoothed it into a plush, rounded nest right in the center of the deep velvet seat cushion. With gentle hands, I scooped Dolores up and lowered her into the warmth. She gave a drowsy chirp and tucked her paws under her chin.
